RWANDA

Rwanda is known as Le Pays des Mille Collines (Land of a Thousand Hills) thanks to the endless mountains in this scenically stunning little country. Rwanda holidays will always feature four important aspects: people, culture, national parks and gorilla watching.

The highlight of a Rwandan safari is seeing the incredible mountain gorillas, on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes, just a few hours drive north of Kigali. Hidden among the bamboo forests are some of the world's last remaining mountain gorillas. For a change of scene, the shores of Lake Kivu conceal some of the best inland beaches on the continent, while Nyungwe Forest in the south of the country is a spectacular montane forest reserve, with excellent birding and primate viewing and is home to many primates. But it's not all monkey business – Kigali, the capital, is safe and sophisticated.

Lake Kivu offers the chance for some beach relaxation and more general sight-seeing, whilst Akagera National Park is a ‘recovering’ park with some good game-viewing and birding, including the chance to see shoebill.

Highlights:

·       Track mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park

·       Nature drives looking for elephant, zebra, giraffe and buffalo

·       The architecture, 1994 Genocide museums and restaurants of Kigali

·       Spot colobus monkeys and chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest National Park

·       Chimpanzee trekking in the Nyungwe Forest

·       Spend a day relaxing on the beaches of Lake Kivu
